Approximately 40% of AT hikers use alcohol stoves.

Most of these hikers (northbound) have been arrested and imprisoned by Pennsylvania (many of the are thankful for that).

Approximately 10% of AT through hikers are shot and killed every year by Federal BATF agents for refusing to hand over their alcohol stoves. This should be considered at least a minor disadvantage of using such stoves.

Ah. Sounds like sage advise. Talk about useless government oversight! Jk.

Except that this is in the Colorado Trail Forum so AT stats are not of much value, especially made up ones ;-)

I heard that they are banned in at least parts of CO, but as I don't hike out west I'm not a good source. I hope someone post an authoritative answer for you.

Yeah we are having a banner year for rain, but I am still concerned about a forest fire. I might just go with esbit.

If there is a fire ban in Colorado then neither alcohol nor esbit stoves are legal since they don't have a shut-off. Suggest you consider a canister stove. Many places to buy fuel along the way.

Ok sounds like I need to call the forest rangers. Thanks for the help.

There are no fire bans along the CT at this time. The monsoonal weather pattern has begun in the San Juans, so there probably won't be any issues this year. The rest of the state is wetter than usual. Alchy stoves should work fine this hiking season. If it gets extremely dry then that could change.
