Default Hemlock Hollow hostel is for sale

This may be old news here on WB and I missed it. I met the owner, Hattie, of Hemlock Hollow while having dinner in Hot Springs. I asked how the hiking season was going and thanked her for the service she provides to AT hikers. She informed me that, do to advancing age and illness in the family, she is selling Hemlock Hollow hostel. It's located 17 miles north of Hot Springs (1.5 miles north of Allen gap) 0.7 miles west of the trail. She said he really enjoys hikers and regrets having to sell. I didn't ask how much she was selling it for but she did say that she was truly hoping to sell to someone that really enjoyed and cared about hikers. If anyone is interested in purchasing the place or just wants to call and thank her for the service she's provided the phone number is 423-787-0917.

My friends and I had the opportunity to meet Hattie at the hostel while waiting for a shuttle this past weekend. It was a chilly rainy day and she treated us to some hot coffee. Hattie stated that the hostel is for sale.....$250K...ish. Her husband just passed away and it is too much for her alone.

I stayed there in early June on the way from Sam's Gap to Hot Springs. It is a real nice setup and Hattie can whip up some good home cookin'. She said when her husband retired he promised her a new house and some rest, instead she has been working 7 days a week for 12 years (if my memory is correct). She seemed really tired and ready for some time off. She is a nice lady and I hope the hostel ends up in the hands of someone that can serve the hiking community as well as she has.

We stayed there on our thru attempt last year and were treated like kings, I hope someone continues its operation as it's well situated and also a beautiful setting.

Would anyone know if the hostel is still open? Their website seems to be down, but perhaps the hostel sold and is under another name?

It is supposed to reopen this summer under new ownership. The old phone was 423-787-0917. Give it a try.

I was just up on the AT this past weekend.I met a hiker who said that they are letting hikers stay there but there is no cooked food available as the cafe is not open yet.

We stayed there about a month ago. We picked up our mail drop and asked if a cabin was available. They said they needed to get the bed ready and we could have the cabin in about half an hour. As we waited, we watched them take a new bed out of the carton and carry it into the cabin. That was followed up with new box springs, a new mattress, and clean sheets. Heaven on earth! Better than our bed at home.

I took a peek in the bunkhouse. It looked as clean and comfortable as our cabin. The bathhouse was clean and at the un-busy time when we visited, there was plenty of water.

The store had a decent resupply and they made coffee in the morning, but didn't have their restaurant license yet. They hope to have it soon, and plan to market their services to hunters and anglers as well as hikers.

The hostel was purchased and has a new owner. I am closing this thread.
