    Default Winter Thru-Hike this Year.

Is anyone else on here considering hiking the Florida Trail this winter?

I'm planning a thru-hike this winter. Apparently the Hiker Kickoff is set for January 6-7 at the Southern Terminus.

Lol... I wasn't raised here, so it's habit for me to still refer to all four seasons

    Of course we have winter.

In South Florida it is one of two seasons. Also know as dry (winter) and wet (summer) although last winter some South Florida trail were flooded, this summer all trail were flooded.

Last winter while I was hiking the average temperature was 85, this summer the average temperature has been 95.

The mosquito have not had any holiday for either season. For the first time I took a Thermacell with me at Christmas/New Years hike, screw the extra weight.

The trouble I have with campfires are the folks that carry a bottle in one hand and a Bible in the other.

I will be most likely starting mid-to late January. Work commitments keep me from starting at the kickoff. After the FT Ill be heading west and starting my PCT thru hike. Here is to a 1100 mile shakedown hike!

In January I want to hike from the North end of Ocala to the east side of Orlando (where I live).

Poppyj i was thinking of doing that same hike. Where is a good source for maps of the FT?
Don't worry about it, just do all you can and let the rough end drag.

There is also an online interactive map for preliminary planning at:

My friend Lucky hiked the southern half early last year; he and I plan to hike the northern half (N. Florida, Panhandle) in Jan/Feb.

In addition to the other map data referenced above, Guthook is out for the FT now; on iPhone now, I'm told soon for Android. I'll probably get this for my Android phone.

I'm thinking about this. How many people go to kickoff ? Where is there more info on kickoff? I downloaded a trail map off the website.

So I guess the Southern Terminus is at the Oasis Ranger Station now? I heard that the loop trail south of there was closed, which is a pity...

trail to the south is now a blue blazed side trail. having hiked in the big cypress last winter, less is more here. it was slow going but we still got up to about 3.5 mph as a max speed for a bit, but you results may very.
