    Default Amicalola to Neels Gap...

I'm planning a hike in late September from Amicalola to Neels Gap (possibly Unicoi if I'm feeling good), this will be my first experience on the AT and I'm just curious if there's anything I need to know...Are there any stretches where water won't be available? Bear issues in any specific areas? Anything I'm not thinking of?

p.s....I plan on tenting near shelters.

Any help will be much appreciated, thanks!

I went thru this same section in May and they were requiring bear canisters from Jarrard Gap to Neels if I remember correctly. Signs posted everywhere. Water was good at the shelters and along the way. Have fun!

Haha...see my post under gear talk about finding shoes...I already wear a size 16, I don't think they even make 17's!

Thanks though, for now I'm wearing regular old New Balance running shoes and a light pack.

From what I've read, the canister rule isn't in effect now? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong (or if I should be carrying a canister anyway)!

I didn't take one--it is only about a 5-6 mile section. Just camp before you get to it.

I find when I hike the thing I care most about is water.

I recently did Springer to Unicoi in 3 1/2 days. I posted a trip report here: http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/show...e!-Trip-Report

I also have some comments about water.

The canister rule is only in effect Mar 1 thru June 1.

Remote for detachment, narrow for chosen company, winding for leisure, lonely for contemplation, the Trail beckons not merely north and south, but upward to the body, mind, and soul of man.

Normal dry section from Hawk Mtn. shelter north to Justis Creek. Tank up.
