You might inquire of other dermatologists then.
dramatic increase in skin cancer in western world in last 30 yrs, while the 3rd world rates stayed essentially flat.
it has led to two conclusions, both involve sunscreen.

    1) sunscreen doenst prevent cancer, it only prevents sunburn, which leads you to spend more time than you should in the sun, bypassing your bodys natural feedback mechanism. IE, because of sunscreen, we spend far more time in sun than we used to.

    2) sunscreen actually breaks down into free-radical compounds which attack cells and cause them to become cancerous.

There is absolutely zero arguement by anyone, against the best and safest thing to do being to wear clothing that keep the sun off you.

Pure junk science (that sunscreen causes cancer), and my dermatologists says to me: use more sunscreen!!! Don't ever try to argue with those who read/hear a couple of popular (rag) media stories and claim such knowledge. Look around at some real medical web sites and make you own conclusions. Here's one from skincancer.org:

    http://www.skincancer.org/skin-cance...unscreens-safe

    Here's one from cancer.org:

    http://www.cancer.org/cancer/news/ex...alth-risk.aspx

Both sites say basically: Use sunscreen! (at least for those parts not covered by clothing, which, no argument, is a great idea)

While the talk of possible cancer causes sounds like an interesting discussing for a pint or two, this thread is about potential CT hikers and their plans in 2015.

Sunscreen and/or clothing as advice in the Colorado high country is of course always welcome.

(I'm in the clothing camp myself with sunscreen as needed on the parts not covered by clothing)

A debate about sunscreen and a discussion that has veered off into discussion about mercury experiments and toxic chemicals in the environment? Probably not-so-much.

    Thanks!

Very sorry for my part of the contribution to this silly drift....

Anyway, FWIW, central CO (where sections 8ish-16ish reside) is running right about "normal" for snowpack, meaning a mid-June start is probably still reasonable, but we're getting dumped on today... (even in west Denver area). The San Juan's are still a bit lean (low snow). I'll actually be snowshoeing around section 7 this weekend and I'll get eyes-on the trail.

Here is the SNOTEL update, look around Leadville and just north for what it would be like around 8-10 days into a CT thru (snowpack numbers are 100-110% or so):

    I'll be there!

    No trail name yet
    Denver -> Durango
    Mid to late June start
This will be my first thru-hike
Visiting buddies in WY prior to the hike - anyone heading to the trail via I-80 and want to split gas?

Hi all, this is my first post so here goes--

    No trail name yet
    Durango-bound!
    Starting June 27th
This will be my first thru hike I'm a medical student and this will be my 'last summer' for quite a long time, so I'm trying to make the most of it and do some adventuring.

@blarghity I'll be visiting Lander WY before I start, probably heading down to Denver on the 26th!

That's funny...my wife is just starting residency in Denver, so I'm using this as a good excuse to go hit the trail for 4-6 weeks.

I'm leaving in late June from Denver. First thru-hike. No trail name...maybe I will use my username: Mountainmarmot.

I'm looking forward to seeing some of you on the trail!

    Trail name: Wolf
Direction: Unsure right now but it looks like I will be hiking Denver - Durango
    Starting Date: Around July 20

I'm still working on the details of when I can get away to go hiking for a month. If I can swing it, this will be my second thru-hike of the CT, and one of many long distance hiking trails that I have already done. The CT is a beautiful trail, and lately I've been feeling a calling to go hiking again. Looking forward to meeting everyone out there.

    Wolf

P.S. I travel on the light side of backpacking, so don't be surprise if I look like a day hiker.

    One more, no trail name.
I'll be starting solo 2nd week of July Denver to Durango.
I'm newly retired and plan to take 6 weeks, no job, no rush, 15 mile/day or so. My wife may join at Salida.
We've been section hiking the Continental Divide Trail forever and finally finished it last year. I'd like to finish a trail all at once for a change!

If all goes as planned, swbo aug. 8.
Still lots of time for plans to go awry.
I got the vacation, but a new boss creates some uncertainty. Need to get relationship established before I beg for 4 weeks off.

Backup plan is a sept. Long trail hike.
