Default Must stop camping from Damascus to Erwin 1st week of June

I have a section hike planned from Damascus, VA to Erwin, TN June 1st through 8th/9th. I look to avoid tenting near shelters as much as possible. I have no must do mileage days; I would just like to be in my car on my way home by Tuesday, the 9th. I like just heading out and letting the day play out as I go, but I do not want to stop at what I think would be a good spot to camp, only to be a mile short of a "MUST STOP" location. Does anyone have an recommendations of "MUST STOP" locations for camping in this stretch?

I camped on the top of Hump Mtn. last year and was amazed with the views but it did get pretty windy and foggy by morning.

Other then camping on the balds (which is not recommended due to the risk of Thunderstorms) not really.

Vanderventer Shelter has an amazing view just behind the shelter. It's directly on the trail so you could take advantage of the view and move on if you wanted to, but it's a great place to spend time.
