Thread: Daily ritual

  1. #1

    Default Daily ritual

When I get into camp, my ritual is put up tent, fetch water, dry clothes/equipment, cook dinner, socialize, then bed. What's yours?

Generally, meet the natives quick intro - gain info, scope out, find/claim a spot (setting up tent or at least putting down gear in that spot), socialize and prepare dinner (including water run), hang out a bit, (set up tent if not done already), in tent check upcoming weather & update social media while recharging electronics, perhaps look at tomorrow's hike. Shut down everything and go to sleep.

Set up camp, do laundry, clean self, assess feet, search for ticks, filter water, send text, assess next day, write in journal, gather wood, relax, eat supper, hang food, enjoy campfire, go to bed. If it is raining, some steps are skipped. I rise early and finish early. I have a morning routine too. It is much more frantic.

At first I thought this was gonna be another outhouse thread. But I guess that would be morning ritual.
Im pretty much a water then shelter then eat kinda guy,and socialize before during and after those other activities.

Water, shelter, food, sunset, stars. Socializing with friends at camp = Yes. Socializing via electronics = No.

    Cook.
While food is soaking set up tent, etc.
Fill water bottles for morning after eating is thru.
    go to sleep.

Set up tent, pee, crawl in tent, go to sleep.

I normally have already eaten dinner a few hours ago at a water source, then hike until dark.

For me, setting up the hammock and arranging the pad and sleeping bag always comes first. For the rest, it depends on what I need most.

No "ritual". I just do what needs to be done when it's time to do it. That varies from day to day.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime; give a man religion and he will die praying for a fish.

If arriving late in the day, task #1 is getting the line in the tree for the bear bag. Trying to do that by fading twilight is an exercise in frustration.
I always know where I am. I'm right here.

Bear bag line tossed so ready when needed (done in day light). Hammock & Tarp (if not raining) / Tarp & Hammock (if raining). Fluff quilts, toss some stuff into the hammock. Either start cooking, or filter water as needed for dinner. while dinner is cooking, get rest of stuff ready, headlight out, look at maps, filter more if needed.

Hammock hangs are where you go into the woods to meet men you've only known on the internet so you can sit around a campfire to swap sewing tips and recipes. - sargevining on HF

for me I do this, Get water, wash hands and face, set up tent, cook dinner, hang clothes if wet, go over the AT Companion for tomorrow's trek, hang food if staying in shelter if not sleep with it, use the bathroom, smoke a cig, sleep, then the next morning I do, break down tent, eat breakfast, smoke a cig, use bathroom, get water, start hiking, I do pretty much the same thing everyday except if it's raining then it changes a little bite.

    Can't say I have a ritual either.

If it looks like it's gonna rain I might set up tent first, if it's already raining I might wait and see. If it's pouring with no chance of stopping then it's a rush and I might be cooking in the tent vestibule or eating uncooked food.

If I already have enough water I might wait until morning to refill, If I get to days end on empty, it's the first thing I look for.

If I'm starving I start eating/cooking, if not it can wait maybe after every thing else is done.

If I'm dirty enough I might need to bath before bed, or maybe that can wait.

Mornings are the same, no set pattern.

One thing I do that most don't is to take a walk in the woods, either late day or early morning maybe while eating out of my mug. After the pack is off I like to explore maybe follow and old fire road, maybe follow a stream up or down. Check out the local geology and fauna away from the beaten trail.

Might be why my first thru-hike too me 6 1/2 months.

The trouble I have with campfires are the folks that carry a bottle in one hand and a Bible in the other.
You never know which one is talking.

The first thing I do is collapse my poles and find a safe place for them, next, I remove my pack...
