GNP Permits

Hi! Just curious if anyone is hiking south bound from Harper's Ferry to Damascus around may and june? Im hiking Virginia as a graduation gift to myself.

I have 2 choices to get from Red Eagle to East Glacier.

1. Hike 28 miles (the distance between RE and EG)

2. When I pick up my permit ask to have one of the campsites between RE and EG added to my permit to break the 28 miles into 2 sections.

Dang, I just wrote a good respond but wasn't logged in so my post got kicked. ouch. Anyway, I'll do a shorty.

Response to #1) That's a big-big day. Triple divide pass is not that bad, but Pitamakan Pass will kick you like a mule with a tooth ache. That being said Pitamakan pass is the most beautiful pass that i've experienced in GNP. I'd even go so far as to say it's more scenic that the north side of the Ptarmigan Tunnel.

Response to #2) Their computer system is ancient. I wonder if they can even manipulate/change a permit once it is entered into the system. Still, it's a very interesting idea. I'd try it. If you can get them to add to your permit you two options for the night, Atlantic Creek or Old Man lake. Atlantic creek is okay but Old Man Lake is awesome. Nat. Geo. was doing covert filming at Old Man last year but all the sherpas were sworn to secrecy so I never found out what they were doing. It's always cool to see something in a film/movie after you've already done it so I'm looking forward to seeing what they were up too.

I'll likely try for Oldman Lake (OLD).

The backcountry office advised me to pick up my permit a day early and request a permit for OLD for the night I will get there. The person I spoke with virtually assured me I would get it, or worse case, Atlantic.

Dang 10K, I saw your post yesterday and it made me geek out and call GNP to see about my permit request....so far nothing, but they told me that most folks had not gotten a response yet and to wait another week. arrgghhh

We just got our permits today by email. Got our first choice for trip #2. Nothing on trip #1.
