Default M65 Military jacket liner & pant liner

Has anyone had any experience the military issue jacket or pant liner for 3 season hiking as a outer layer on cold evenings. They are very cheap and seem light, but I can't find any info about weight/temp rating.

Do they have any value to the UL hiker? Or are they a waste of lbs.

There is a very good article here on WB to essentially turn your liner into a Montbell Thermawrap clone.

Worn under a rain jacket, without any modifications, they are surprisingly warm. I used one on the BMT during a cold snap.

I'd say it is roughly equivalent to a 200 WT fleece.

As for the pants, probably overkill for most three-season backpacking. OTOH, I do use them myself for deep shoulder season and winter backpacking. I'll also throw them on just before I take off for a backpacking trip when I am doing a trail head bivvy. Worn over shorts as I cook my trailhead breakfast and coffee.

At less than $20 shipped (in the US) , a great price to performance ratio. Get the "long" version as the regular version is sized for combat boots.

I have brought my M65 jacket liner on many hiking or cross country skiing trips to use at the end of the day while in camp. I'm surprised you don't see them used more often do to it being very inexpensive and light.

Here is a modernized version of one with pockets and buttons.

I now have two – lost one on the Trail in 2012 and had my wife mail me another before Bubble Foot (THANKS !!) found the first and caught it up to me.

Keep in mind, 2012 was warmer than usual.

I wore mine backwards over my chest, covering my short sleeved wicking shirt. My backpack kept my……………. back toasty warm until I stopped for breaks, etc. Then I started to get cold and put the liner on correctly. I rarely put my rain jacket on to cut the wind or keep warmer.

I also saturated it with Camp-Dri type silicon waterproofing.
This time – 2016 – I have a down vest to wear under/over it while not moving. I’m still taking them.

It’s not the best, as the seams are starting to come apart, but it’s very light and warm in my opinion.

As well, the sleeves are a bit short for my “ape” arms. Hit me about the wrist.

I followed the directions here on WB to turn my liner into a jacket. It works great for me. I bought mine larger than usual on the 'net, and am able to layer under it, and either my rain jacket or wind shirt over the top completes the system.

The pants legs are really wide, with buttons, meant to be buttoned into military pants I assume. If you have a sewing machine you can easily lessen the width with a seam, and cut off the excess which will also get rid of the buttons. Less drafty and saves about 5oz.

Awesome link for the jacket mod. I might have to try it. Have you guys seen the m65 wool pant liners? Not good for backpacking but I love th for winter camping and hunting.

I've found that they, jacket and pant liners (not the wool ones mentioned by Glacier) make for lightweight supplements for when your sleeping bag isn't enough.

We have two each. One each with sleeves cut off and front sewn. Nice sweater vests.
They compress well and dry fast.

My bro-in-laws still use those. Very good camp layer in the South during late fall, early winter when combined with a marmot precip type shell jacket.
