The Indian Creek trail (allows mtbikes dogs and camping) and Roxborough state park (none of the three ), are good alternatives.

The classic route is a wide, dirt road. Not very classic. (Though the big horns at the dam are nice)

May 08, 2015 - In the interest of public safety, Denver Water has closed Waterton Canyon to public recreation. This event is not related to the recent weather conditions and does not pose a flood risk downstream to persons or property.
Our High Line Canal diversion structure has deteriorated and could potentially release wood debris into the river, which could pose a safety issue to recreational river users. We will continue to evaluate and monitor the situation, and will reopen the canyon when we can ensure the safety of the public.

well, that was quick.
Hey that's good news! I too was hoping to start there even though I get the impression it might be a little lack luster. Don't want an asterisk beside my thruhike. Can't wait to be in beautiful Colorado this summer.
