Got tired of hikers asking to fill water bottles or use the rest rooms?
Needed the money?
Decided to retire?

The new name implies it might be more hiker friendly.

Actually the ICON was the Worthington Bakery before it was Joe's. That is what it was before Joe got it. Joe only had it for a comparatively short time. As long as the physical location is the same as the Worthington and Joe's and still taking care of hikers, I guess you can say the new place will still be able to carry the designation as ICON, at least is spirit anyhow. I hope they decide to sell pie.

Unless the new owner rearranges the display cases the bathroom will still be behind the counter. Allowing the public behind the counter in a food service area is a big no-no with the Health Department.

I've been to Joe's twice while hiking and Larry (the owner) was OK to me both times.

is it? At some of the Chinese Restaurants I've been to I had to walk all the way through the kitchen, past the cooks, staff and flaming greasy Woks to get to the bathroom.

According to their Facebook page, the Sunrise Deli closed at the end of the year and was for sale. Anyone know if it has reopened?

Well that didn't last long.
Wonder if the Health Department caught them letting customers behind the counter to access the bathrooms

I don't know. Seems that place would be hard to pass by for any hiker. Good sandwiches and cold sodas, who could resist?
Of course it takes more than hikers to keep a business open. I know the locals frequented the place. I met a nice couple at Joe's that invited me to their house a block away for lunch when I was on my thru.

Just an update, Sunrise AT Deli is still closed.

Yea, that was a disappointment when I went through there earlier this year. But I found Gyp's Tavern just a little ways up the road and had a nice burger and beer for a late lunch, so it worked out in the end. It's right on the lake and would be a good place to hang out if you have some time to kill.

That place was a step off the trail, walk in and grab some fresh food joint for 50 years. Before Joe's it was a bakery. Worthington Bakery to be exact. Fresh baked goodies from pies to bread. Too bad a bakery or sandwich shop is not here for current hikers and may not be there for future ones.

the blog linked by Second Half suggested that hikers "respectfully patronize businesses that welcome us", but apparently the employee hired by the business wasn't very welcoming, so down it goes. Catering to hikers isn't likely to be very successful as a primary source of business; there just aren't enough of us enough of the time.

Why is there a parrot on the sign? I don't have many AT miles, but never seen a parrot.

Sounds like it was poorly run and the YELP reviews indicate the same. I like the pictures, 6 donuts beneath a plastic Tupperware cover and menu/prices written in sharpie on poster board.
