There had been some hopes that the new trail would be open late this year.

That is good news! In 1983 my wife and I, knowing nothing about Katahdin, happened to show up there. Since Abol was the quickest (less miles) way up, we took it. What a beautiful hike it was. And when we reached the summit we saw the knife's edge, couldn't resist and walked across that. We finished going down the Helon Taylor trail and hitched a ride back to the car.
It was a long and unforgettable day!
We summited wearing sneakers and tee shirts... no spare water and some ham sandwiches in our pockets.
It was 1983 and we were young and fearless!

I have to say; it was one of the best days/memories of my life... a flatlander from Miami, Florida, I felt like I was on top of the world!
