Default Realistic Fiction, Wilderness Survival Books?

I just read The Martian by Andy Weir, and enjoyed it quite a bit. But now looking for other books and wondered if anyone here had some suggestions. I've read a handful of the AT/PCT adventures, and am looking for something like realistic fiction, perhaps with wilderness survival.

Something like Hatchet / My Side of the Mountain, perhaps more in depth and higher reading levels.

Not the exact kind of books I normally read, but kinda fitting into that genre is Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, and Emergency by Neil Strauss. Really loved both books.

Are you looking for actual survival tales, or more of a "how to" stay out in the woods for a week kind of thing?

"Not Without Peril" may scratch your itch on the survival side, which takes real events and offers some explanations of what is thought to have happened in some of the instances. It will likely change how you look at being in the mountains, especially the taller White Mountains.

You will like any Calvin Rutstrum books, but I recommend starting out with Chips from a Wilderness Log. Also any of the books by Harlan Hubbard...start with Shantyboat. These aren't fiction...they are narratives or journals.

Since I also like science fiction, a couple I've enjoyed enough to re-read are from Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle: Lucifer's Hammer and Footfall. (Anything by these two is great, but these draw on Dr. Pournelle's interest and writings in survivalism.)

Les Stroud has written some books and he's very serious, realistic and down to earth when it comes to survival http://www.amazon.com/Les-Stroud/e/B001JRV55M

Also has some stuff on youtube https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...the+wilderness

Sorry, maybe Les Stroud isn't for you; I just noticed you're looking for fiction and I also looked up the book "The Martian". I withdraw my previous post

Wow, thanks for the suggestions guys! I'll take a look and see what I can find at the library along these lines and get more reading going!
Mags - I saw that XKCD comic a while ago, but hadn't read the book or known about the movie it went over my head. I completely get it now.

I can't comment on fiction, but if you're looking for a good non-fiction book that is more than a "how to start a fire without matches" sort of thing, try Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales. He goes through actual survival incidents and looks at the traits that determine who lived and who died (hint: practical skills are less important than attitude). It's a good read and will change the way you look at survival situations.

    Truth be stranger than fiction.

Do a bit of research for shipwrecks & mutiny.
The wreck of the whale ship Essex by a sperm whale.
The mutiny aboard the whale ship Globe.
Shackleton's expedition aboard the Endurance, the trek across Antarctica and the voyage in the boat James Caird.
