Hello BB, I do not want to chose above, but I will bite.

To Benton Macake, who had the vision to create this little slice of wilderness where man could escape urban environment and commune with nature.

To Myron Avery who made this dream a reality.

To Earle Shaffer, to Grandma Gatewood, to the Peace Pilgram, who paved a path and showed how hiking the trail could be a transformative experience,

To the thousands of volunteers who maintain the trail, who give so much of them selves to this vision and to others. Some of them are on Whiteblaze. These are the ambassadors of the Appalachian Trail. They tend to be quiet. They do not call attention to themselves. But we owe them all our gratitude and thanks.

People such as Matt Kirk and JPD have shown caring for the trail and community over time. They have been found on it often.

This is what makes them a good ambassador. The records simply give notoriety.

No need for a link BB, she is a member of this forum and has posted often enough in regards to the ATC. You will also find her post in one of the Baxter/SJ/hiker misbehavior threads that are active.

Like it or not, the everyday hiker is the ambassador of the trail. And they make a much louder statement than any appointed ambassador. Such as illegally swimming in private pools, sh**ting in public areas for all to find, getting drunk and being rowdy in towns forcing people to put signs up that wish to keep hikers out.

Go ahead and appoint an ambassador, but whatever they do/say will be drowned out by the true ambassadors.

Choosing one would only diminish the payoff of having multiple ambassadors. A sum is greater than it's parts and having both at the forefront of national prominence should pay dividends for the future of the AT .

We all have the power to become ambassadors when we speak well of those who have poured everything into the greater good of the trail and do it unconditionally.

I personally have never met JPD or SJ so I will reserve my judgement on their true motives of their FKS endeavors.

I have nothing but praise for Laura P whom I truely believe is making a positive impact with her work at the AT Conservatory.

Seems a bit early to tell. SJ is just getting started, and only finished his thru a few days ago. JPD had a long run as an advocate for the AT before she did her record breaking thru.

I get that some people are not thrilled with SJ, particularly given the problems at BSP. But I am also picking up some negative vibes towards JPH in this thread -- do people have an issue with her?

I have met Jen, attended a workshop she did on long distance backpacking and I could not imagine a better ambassador for the AT.

I believe it to be a great point that LaurieP is the best ambassador for the AT. I am embarrassed to not recognize that nuance.

I would vote for LaurieP also. I just met her at the STC office at the end of my section.
