Looks like Orange Crush has an ankle sprain and is resting in Etna, CA. He intends to be back on the trail but will be taking it slow.
New Iceman news. Through Aug 13 he is at Sierra City and has covered 1444 miles. So 113 miles in the last 4 days. Bad bugs and pretty hot. Sketchy water at times as a lot of the springs and streams are dry.
I pestered him with a note and he was nice enough to answer a few questions about his hike(s).
He is new to thru hiking.
He started out just to do the AT and thought it would take 6-7 months as that was what he had read. But once he got going he was just fast and he does not seem to have been one who spends time in town and taking zeros. So at some point he got to thinking about the PCT and decided to do it this year as well. Took him a few weeks after the At to get regeared and organized and off he went.
He did say that he thought at one point about doing all of the Triple Crown but other life demands (like returning to school) had to take precedence.
He did say he is capable of going quite a bit faster than he has been hiking. But he has no reason to try and go as fast as he can, so he just does what he feels like and is having fun.
He got a kick out of knowing we are all following his hikes
New Iceman update.
He summited Whitney on Aug 30 and has knocked off 1874 miles so far. Averaging 29.7 mile/day counting a couple of zeros and some short days in towns. Not bad.
On 25 Aug he ran into a hiker named Dusty who he had met on the AT earlier this year.
