    Exclamation Washout at Ghost Ranch

Just posted to the CDT_List Forum by Jim Wolf:

"A "hundred-year flood" devastated the Arroyo del Yeso immediately above Ghost Ranch (New Mexico) in mid-July.

An inspection of the area notes tremendous bank cutting and judges that this section of the CDT is currently impossible to use. Some trail work may be undertaken this summer, but there is no assurance that the route will be opened until next year, if then.

Until further notice, hikers are advised to use the designated route through Martinez Canyon (though they may still detour to visit Ghost Ranch before or after doing so).

Southbounders need to pay particular attention, since they may find themselves having to retrace their steps for many miles if they are blocked only about a mile or so from their destination at Ghost Ranch."

    Sorry to hear this.

There's always the road walk option into Ghost Ranch --- and it's well worth the visit. AYCE meals and folks treated me and other hikers very well, plus it's a pretty cool place in general.

SOBO hikers should bear right at Harris Bear Camp (approximately 28_14.5 - Guthook 713.7) and continue on the official route to miss the Ghost Ranch washout. You will cross highway 84 at 27_144AP (Guthook 699.9) and that is probably the easiest place to hitch to Ghost Ranch. You will not be disappointed by the official route which includes a spectacular rimwalk through beautiful mesa country en route to the Chama River Canyon - Skull Bridge (26_14.3, Guthook 685.0, ) on recently constructed trail. That is where the alternate and official routes come together again.
