MSR offering free shelter to 2016 thru hikers who qualify

Got this in an email from MSR:

Thru-Hiking this Year? We Have Your Shelter Covered.

Our new Thru-Hiker series of Mesh Houses and Wings were engineered for long-distance living. And we want to give you one to take into the wild. If you plan on completing a full thru-hike this summer, fill out our application to put one of these shelter systems #thruthepaces. Please fill out our survey by March 17th. If selected, you'll hear from us by March 31st."

NOTE: I have no connection to MSR other than as an occasional customer; I also don't know any more about the offer than what I've posted here. If you don't want to click on the link, I am guessing that MSR has something on their website.

Interesting product line, reminds me a little of the Hyperlite Echo shelters minus the beak. I do like that mesh house though without the free offer $180 for a 20D nylon tarp seems a little steep.

Not a huge fan of the 1200mm waterproof rating of the tarps but i suppose it should be fine. Anyone know the actual specs of the tarps (length and width)?

It's hard to tell on their site...but I think it may actually be a (slightly) hex tarp.

Found the specs in one of the photos: th 70 - 104in top side length, 96in width, 114in bottom length. (8.66ft x8ft x 9.5ft) th 100 - 114in x 114in x 126in (9.5ft x 9.5ft x 10.5ft)

interesting configuration and it does look like a little bit of a hex shape on the width/ends.

Weight specs seem comparable to our typical lightweight 30d silnylon tarps.

Be wary of the MSR Flylite wingie thing. Me and my backpacking buddy Patman used one for a couple trips, or at least he did and I got to check it out fairly well.

Wary, perhaps, but his review looks not that negative to me, wind-worthiness being the main thing.
