So tell me gentlemen, do you really NEED underwear on a hike?

No you don't. Lot's of male hikers go commando. I tend to hike in water shorts or hiking shorts that have liners built into them during the warmer months. Keeps Richard and the boys happy.

No, never a problem with chafing if you keep yourself clean. Daily clean-up of salty sweat goes a LONG way to reducing chafing. On the rare occasion that some occurs, clean up, then apply some Gold Bond Medicated before bed, no more problem in AM.

Commando provides for fantastic ventilation throughout day. Much less exhibitionism with today's longer shorts styles. Back in the day of short shorts for men and women, we had to be a little less inhibited during breaks and around camp.

If I'm not rockin' compression shorts I might as well stay home.

NEED it? No. But a good pair of compression shorts can work wonders if you have the thunder thighs

I don't. Will sometimes use a built in lycra or tight mesh liner brief though. Woo hoo. With the lose nylon running shorts I use I do have to be respectful of others when I sit around or the dragon escapes from its lair.

Only way to know what works for you is to give it a try. In hot weather I find that the extra ventilation is a huge benefit.

Not here. Just wash every night with some wet wipes to get the salt and sweat off. One less thing to stink and worry about.
