Doing Dicks Creek Gap to the NOC in October. What kind of crowds should I expect? Looking forward to a Ron Brown shuttle.

Be a few out. Nothing like spring. Your good. Great time.
Might be a little crowded around the Columbus Day Holiday weekend, otherwise a great time to be out in the woods! Be prepared for some cold mornings, especially later in October. Usual weather for October in that area is sunny, mild days with low humidity and clear and cool nights.
BEST TIME INDEED!!! No bugs.. no crowds.. no crazy trail magic.. just peace, the woods.... love it than! The colors are a changin than as well!!!

You will run into hikers on the weekend, especially around Standing Indian and at the very end of your hike. Popular time of year to be hiking. There still will be bugs. Watch out for hornets and yellow jackets on warm sunny days.
You might see some fast moving SOBO s. We met a few mid November. Have a great hike.
North Carolina bear hunting season starts in mid-October. There is no hunting on the AT but some trailheads (which are near trails hunters can use), like at Deep Gap near Standing Indian, are popular launching points for hunters and their many dogs. Think about wearing some blaze orange.
