It's not a concern for me but my wife......just trying to appease her.....if it were up to me I'd have zero communication for the duration....happy wife = happy life...

I'm clueless about electronic gadgetry (i.e., isn't Spot a GPS device?) and I never take it while hiking. But I've done the CW quite a few times and know it reasonably well. There's plenty of high-altitude exposure and even at times some line-of-sight to a few far-off cell towers. But each time I've hiked it and have run into others, they've each made it known that they're frustrated with their cell service; it seems a big part of what they miss. I don't delve into what carrier they use, because I don't care.

My advice, based on what I've witnessed (but haven't experienced myself), is to take the east route if this is that great of a concern for you (or your wife). It's beautiful too, maybe just not quite as much so. (However, it's generally safer from the electrical storm threat.)

Oops, sorry about that. I suppose the best course of action is to let your wife know you might not get any reception at times, possible for a few days. Welcome to the past!

In the past, I've met others out for day hikes or at road crossings who've offered to text a short message to loved ones on my behalf. And they always followed through! While this isn't exactly a reliable method it could be an option if reception is nonexistent. Or send her a quick "I'm alive" via Spot.

The Guthook apps can send a text message with your location and anything else you would like to say. Katrina taught me that text messages get sent when voice calls won't work. Have fun.

It will work from where you sit now.
    Start the app.
Touch the GPS button in the lower left corner.
Then touch the circle that comes up next to GPS.
Your location comes up in a text box.
Touch the icon on the right side of the text box.
Send the message as text or email.
The recipient gets the message and a Google maps link.
    Easier done than typed.

    You're welcome.
Another member mentioned it somewhere here. I sat and pressed all the icons until I got it to work. Glad to help.
