    Well... you can 'hike' anywhere in the park you want... but yes, a thru-hiker permit is only valid to 'camp' at the designated campsite/shelters along the AT.

    I just did a loop from campsite 64 to Clingsman Dome, site 68, and then 72. Lord it was tough hiking straight up to clingmans dome. But worth it.

    You should be good to hammock camp with your permit.

    I will sit by waiting for the shelter to fill.
    Hiking the AT is “pointless.” What life is not “pointless”? Is it not pointless to work paycheck to paycheck just to conform?.....I want to make my life less ordinary. AWOL

    I'm with AfterParty, I'll wait. Heck if i'm in the shelter when someone else comes in, I will gladly give them my spot. I gotten good at setting up in the dark and rain.
