It didn't look too new when I was there in May, but it didn't really look like it needed replacing either. Nice water source. Privy is reported to be nice as well. I continued on to Brown Fork, but had planned to stay at Sassafras. Discussion of socialism with Daddy Mention and Paul Revere was too good to stop.
I heard it was replaced this past November

I posted the following message several weeks ago.
"The funky old Sassafras shelter has been replaced with a new two story one. I stayed in the funky old one on Oct. 22 with one of the construction crew. The new one was about half done maybe but didn't have a roof yet."

pete...looking forward to seeingn the new sasssafras gap shelter..what are u doing sunday???
Just an update... Was there a while back and they had just re-stained it, the maintainers were there working on it at the time. Nice shelter with a number of nice tent sites around it.
Good. The old shelter was teetering on falling down and that was 10 years ago. Just looked like it was precariously balanced in that ravine area. How about Low Gap shelter too? That one is kinda an eyesore.
Hike more and learn to reduce gasoline consumption
OK so where is the new shelter in relation to the old one? There wasn't much level ground for tenting as I remember.
In training for the Chappaquiddick Triathlon "Drink - Drive - Swim"
The new shelter is located between where the old shelter was and the creek. The front of the shelter now faces the creek.
