The new tent sites are fairly nice. You can camp there or about a mile further at Hightower Gap if you wanted to. Before hawk there is an old roadbed that is flat, but no water.

The new sites are pretty much the best sites to be found, as long as you don't insist on being in a shelter. 30 tent pad sites, and several of those are also tagged for hammocks (but if you have a hammock, you are not restricted to the specified sites or trees - it's just for convenience). There's a privy at about the halfway point. 3 or 4 job boxes along the trail (large, bear-proof metal boxes so no need to mess with bear cables). Good water near site #30. Going NOBO, the actual shelter is about 1/2 mile further down the trail. I highly recommend trying the new sites.
