My dog has a raincoat, got it for cheap at an REI garage sale, and I was wondering if it's necessary for a thru. She doesn't mind getting wet and I've got a little towel to dry her off with, but will she be too cold in the whites? We're hiking SOBO.

What kind of dog? And what is her fur like? I've got two border collies and the rain never gets through their base coat. They would be too hot if I added a rain coat. I've had them out working cattle in wet 40* weather and they're panting because they're active.
I do not put a rain jacket on my dog. he would disown me.

I personally don't. I feel like she would just get hot.
Absolutely. Just as for me though, it's more for the down time than for the hiking time. Dogs get wet and cold. DUH.

My dog has very short, but fairly coarse and quick drying fur. When it's cold outside I will bring it. He has a 2 piece 3 in 1 coat that has a fleece liner and outer raincoat. If rain may be in the forecast for warmer times of the year, I would leave it at home. The jacket is really more for at camp than on the trail, as his pack acts largely as a jacket on its own. Oddly enough, he LOVES wearing clothes. I think it reaffirms his belief that he is a people just as the rest of us.
