    Default Trail Names

Is there any "central clearing house" for trail names? If not, how would you suggest I check to find if a trail name is in use?

First, the traditional way in which one got a trail name was it was bestowed upon them by others - it wasn't chosen.

That said, there is no central clearing house. You would have to search many hiking related sites, such as here, backpackinglight, trailjournals, views from the top, GORP, american hiking, hammockforums backpacker, the ATC registry, regsiters from other trails, regional hiker sites, etc., and you still likely wouldn't have 10% of the trail names being used because they simply aren't published. It's not uncommon to see popular common trail names duplicated, just as there are multiple John Smiths in real life. Just do a google search of the name you want to use along with the name of as many hiking organizations you can think of or google up.

Or, just don't worry about it, and choose a name you like.

As stated some are duplicated, if hiking too close together sometimes trail names will be modified to differentiate the hikers from each other. I seem to recall something like Rocket and 'Rocket B', B being the first letter of her name Barbara, but also used as a pun on another Rocket.

As in real life names are often reused and none are sacred to one hiker.

Thanks to you both. I expected as much, but just thought I would ask.

Food and drink names are very common and abused.

Just figure up something that uniquely describes yourself or a favorite of yours.

I am a maintainer usually carrying an axe. I have a favorite book about Vikings. So Tennessee Viking.

Trail names usually change once you socialize with our hikers.

Or you could do something really wild and crazy and just use the name your parents gave you.

I hiked with three different Giggles and many with Bear in their name. As they said above, a true trail name is given.

I can't start till my dog Party dies. Hence I dubbed my self afterparty. Its great cause I never drink more then 1 beer and that's not common.
Hiking the AT is “pointless.” What life is not “pointless”? Is it not pointless to work paycheck to paycheck just to conform?.....I want to make my life less ordinary. AWOL

I believe this is as good as it gets. Some of us are beyond rehabilitation.
