Default What can you see from Katahdin?

So I was just asked a really cheesy trivia question as a pickup line based off of my summit picture on a dating site, and I realized I don't definitively know the answer. Can you see any parts of New Hampshire or Vermont or other states from the summit?
There's no reward at the end for the most miserable thru-hiker.
After gear you can do a thru for $2,000.
No training is a substitute for just going and hiking the AT. You'll get in shape.

Canada and the ocean are about 100 miles away, so on a really clear day you might be able to see to Canada and the ocean.

And rocks. Lots of rocks. And trees below. LOTS of trees. A few ponds and mountains below in the distance. Or sometimes, nothing but fog.

Not so much any more. The mills are dead and many have been closed and torn down. Too expensive to operate and/or modernize due to labor and fuel costs. There are a few smaller stacks left, but they'll likely be coming down soon as well. Great Northern stack demo video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8IWBzl9X4I

All I remember seeing is forest down below with a few small mountains in the distance.

Fall is amazing. With sunny weather highs in the low 50's and a sub 10 mph breeze it's iconic ME fall hiking at some of its very best.

Definitely not NH and VT. The usual discussion is that whites in NH and Katahdin can be seen from Sugarloaf. Katahdin is right at the horizon and not very impressive from Sugarloaf.

Last two times I was up there I could barely see the terminus sign it was so cloudy.

I mostly saw Labrador. OK, not really -- it just looked like territory about 1,000 miles further north.

You can not see the first sunrise in the continental US

•October 7 to March 6 Cadillac Mountain, Maine
•March 7 to March 24 West Quoddy Head Lighthouse Lubec, Maine
•March 25 to September 18 Mars Hill, Maine
•September 19 to October 6 West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, Lubec, Maine

That said its a very impressive sight as the terrain to the east is relatively flat. I have not done a sunrise from the summit but have seen a sunset (not by choice). I do try to head up Helon Taylor trail early in the AM and usually catch sunrise from above treeline. When the sun is just rising the east side of katahdin lights up and positively glows.

You can certainly see Nesuntabunt and WhiteCap to the south.

Not sure if that link will work correctly but that gives you a good idea of what you'll see.

Wow that's a handy program! I have copies of some old fire tower maps with hand drawn versions of a profile and a book that someone did for NH summits but its nice to see real time version
