Welp, la vieja and I are leaving for the Jasper area in two days. Managed to find a way to hit both Berg Lake and the Skyline Trail in Jasper NP.

Berg Lake has to be a one-nighter out and back trip, so we'll have to either:

    1) Hike all the way up to the lake on Day 1, then back down to our site at Whitehorn (~6 miles south of the lake)
    2) Hike to Whitehorn, wake early on Day 2 to finish the hike up to Berg, then back down to the car to head towards Jasper.

Looking at the topo and some pics I've seen, the trail looks moderately difficult but not too bad. Either way, my Chicago lungs will slow me down. Miss that feeling though!

Thank you all for the help and suggestions, as usual. Cheers

The parking lot to Whitehorn is a piece of cake. The real hike starts at Whitehorn to Emperor campsite. From Emperor to the Berg Lake cabin is level.
Get an early first light start from Whitehorn. Early lunch at Berg Lake and back to the parking lot before dark. Enjoy! Nothing like it!

Too bad you only have one night. The view from Snowbird Pass (a day hike from Berg Lake) provides a spectacular view of a huge icefield.

You do know that there are campgrounds north of the Berg Lake Cabin & CG? You could hike into Jasper NP and still be close to the views around Berg lake. On the other hand, everything could be full.
    Enjoy your trip.

Just back from the trip, Berg was amazing. Got very lucky with weather and smoke. On our hike out, the smoky haze was coming up the valley. By the time we were back in Jasper, couldn't see a thing. Will have to get back up there - those mountains are something else.
