Someone posted on Koltin's other Facebook site that Koltin was at the NOC today (the post was 5 hours old).

So at the time of the post (12 noon) that would be day 4.5 at mile 137.1 = 30.46 mi average per day. Not lookin too good but it's good to know that he hasn't thrown in the towel yet.

I read a comment on his site that said he started on Sun May 14th at 5am. So to recalculate.
day 5.3 at mile 137.1 = 25.86 miles per day.

I figured he might average 30mpd, but now that seems generous. I based that on his mountain trail running experience. Perhaps his pack is slowing him down....

What's so hard about that section? (I ask in earnest -- I have not hiked GA/NC yet).

He's about 70 miles behind Annish after 5 days.

It's a merry little roller coaster from Bly to NOC. It will be interesting to see if he decides to bail before GSMNP. He hasn't updated his AT FB page in 4 days now. The record is merely a dream for him at this point...

Right after the GA/NC border is a nasty climb out of Bly Gap. It's steep and most hikers have been hiking since at least Dicks Creek Gap (10 miles of roller coaster hills). It feels like it never ends.

As stated, most hikers have already hiked at least 9 miles before hitting the NC/GA border a short distance from Bly Gap. I've never heard anyone say they enjoyed the climb out of of Bly Gap. The first climb to Sharp Top is ~657ft in .56 miles then you immediately climb up to Courthouse Bald which is ~628ft in 1 mile. If I recall, it's mostly up and not switched. There's little cover if the sun is out too. The fact that he only did 15.3 miles that day on his FKT attempt led me to assume he had a rough day entering NC.

There is a lot of elevation gain but any serious contender would be able to handle it easily. Maybe it is nice to have an early challenge to weed out the pretenders.

    Absolutely nothing
Most fit hikers could do those #s with minimal pack if tried

They might be wiped after several days of it

According to his FB feed he has quit. He said keeping up the necessary pace was not a problwm. It just wasn't any fun.

And then someone stole his pack while he was in the bathroom at the NOC.

It wasn't for that woman last year. Couple of strategic hitches and back on track. Sorry to hear about the pack. FKTErs sure have bad luck, stolen packs, assaults and shoe theft.

What a sad way for this to end. As if failing a FKT attempt wasn't bad enough then to have some low life dirt bag rip off his pack on top it.
I hope he reported the stolen pack to the authorities. I know I would have. It probably wont get your pack back but it might increase patrols in the area to help the next guy. maybe.
They should treat back pack thieves like they treated horse thieves in the old west.

Wasn't fun? Wonder how much $$$ he raised. Maybe enough for a new pack.
