Default Strange Graffiti Found in AT Shelters

I have seen this graffiti owl in multiple shelters before and I am wondering if anyone knows who makes these and what they mean. Could just be normal graffiti but it seems so strange and creepy that I wanted to see if anyone knew a story behind it. The first image is from Campbell shelter in Virginia and I don't remember where the second one comes from.

Do these jokers include sharpies on their checklists for packing? Do they include it in their base weight? I can just picture them packing up and... oh wait.. I need some tools to leave my mark on property as I hike...

Unfortunately graffiti attacks more graffiti and publicizing it encourages idiots.

Found a graffiti on a picnic table the other day. It said "Russell [heart]'s Amanda." What bugged me about it was that whoever did this planned it and thought it out. It wasn't just the act of a thoughtless person who did it on the spur of the moment. After they carved their message into the table top, they colored in the letters with crayons...wasn't colored markers or they would have faded by now...the message was dated several months ago. The message wasn't carved that deep into the surface, so I got out my knife and was able to smooth out the table top and remove the last two letters. The graffiti now reads "Russell [heart]'s A man."

Who remembers the "Smiley Face Killers" hooplah a few years back. Seems a bunch of people have been found dead/murdered through the years at sites where the graffiti included smiley faces, among other stuff. Some detectives were convinced it was the work of a secret murderous national gang and the smiley face was their calling card. Then there's the camp who thinks it's all a big coinkidink.
