Important on high ridges and meadows (eg. Grayson Highlands, last week.) Also, don't forget sunblock.

I just got some sunglasses for the AT, and tried them out on a couple local hikes with and without my sun hat. They're sized for kids, but work for me because I've got a small head. In this small size they weigh less than 1/3 of my glass lens Ray-Bans. (Plus they're $2 sunglasses instead of $200.) If I don't use them they'll end up in a hiker box.

When I was young and dumb I never wore them. Now as I am older and wiser, always.

I had nitro methane sprayed into my eyes several years ago had to switch from contacts to glasses for awhile. Two years later my eye doctor said I could switch back to contacts. Since then I have worn sunglasses practically year round. Even my safety glasses are tinted a little.

I brought some nice sunglasses. Wore them just a few times. About a month later I found that they were broken from being in my pack. If you think you need them then bring cheap ones. I wear sunglasses all the time otherwise. I just didn't need them on the trail after the leaves grew in.

Brought a pair of Oakleys I had owned for ~10 years. Ended up barely using them because of the green tunnel. Lost them and didn't notice until the next day when I was actually out in the sun. I know exactly where I lost them but I wasn't hiking back at that point.

Bring cheap if you bring some.

Hiking is the only time when I don't bring sunglasses.

Nice to have sunglasses and or visor. A hike is not just about hiking or necessarily always being on trail.

LOL! In that case, I should be a hit with the ladies. 4"+ on my left forearm where the malignant melanoma used to be.

I also wear my sunglasses on the trail to protect my eyes from low hanging limbs that the person in front of you let fly back with no warning.
