bear spray works, who knew
Brown bear = grizzly bear
Springer to Katahdin: 1991-2018
Not quite
Grizzly are brown bears
Not all brown bear are grizzly
The grizzly is a distinct sub species of brown bear, as are kodiak bears
Coastal brown bears can be huge, much larger than inland grizzly. Brown bear is usually used term for bears on coast, grizzly for inland. Brown bears can be over 1000 lbs. Theres a continuous spectrum as move inland, the bear get smaller.

Similar event in Glacier NP a year or two ago.
Wake up cyclists. Obviously the bear spray needs to be in your hand with the safety off. Otherwise it's over before you know it has started.
Be safe!

People also need to check the expiration date on the spray as well. It can lose potency and pressure. Law enforcement swap out about every 2-3 years.

The last two encounters at the very least were defensive in nature a parent defensively protecting her children from a perceived threat.
Who knew parents in the animal kingdom would possibly behave in such ways?
NO DIFFERENT than how many of us humans would behave if our children were perceived as possibly being fatally threatened.
You would not want to encounter my youngest sis, one of my bros, or myself if one of their children, my nieces or nephews, should any of us perceive a possible life threat to them.
Two good examples of how strong, fast, and catastrophic a Brown Bear attack can occur are in an actual occurrence when a man hand feeding a a bear runs out of marshmallows literally loses his head in front of his family with one swipe from a paw and in Scorcese's The Revenant when DeCaprio gets mauled.
First actual occurrence was in one of the FACES OF DEATH documentary a film about how people die.
Amen to a speedy recovery for the cyclist. Whew!
What gets left out of these encointers in a rush to describe the horror and enjuries...or worse is the human responsibility of doING all we know to do to avoid such encounters. This man is alive because his friend did that!!!
