Default Meet The First Thru-Hiker On The Appalachian Trail - An Army Veteran

An article on Earl Shaffer and his AT journey. Short but concise.

With this link you can read his actual journal.

Anyone can help the Smithsonian transcribe books like this. I helped on the Earl Shaffer Diary project transcribing several pages including the page where he climbs Katahdin. I thought it was pretty cool to be a part of that. By the way Earl's handwriting is atrocious!

Years ago I also was part of a group that did this - The Gutenberg Project. I read "Walking with Spring" last year. Is the journal the same, or more detail oriented?
