Default After back to back issues with pads in CO....who uses booties??

After 6 years of hiking with my JRT he's never had pad issues on east coast after 20+mpd only out west.....i.e. Co...many Colorads say they use booties for their pups due to all the sharp rocky conditions...I've never heard many peps having luck with them on east coast...any insight appreciated...I thought my pups pads were tough as he pulls my kid on his skateboard almost every day on hot asphalt...looking back I should have applied mushers secret before my hike started...

I would guess that some dogs are more prone to pad problems. I live in Colorado and hike high passes regular with my dog and he has never had any problem. I don't think Musher's will help. It is designed to help in snow. If it softens the pads it might make things worse. You may get some relieve with booties. Worth a try.

My friend who runs her border collie up to 40 mpd uses a balm on the pads. Maybe something like bag balm, I forgot exactly what, but a pet shop should know.

The decomposed Pikes Peak granite you traversed is tough on bare feet.

Most dogs won't leave there booties on. I spent 70 on a nice pair, and my dog hates them.
Instead I used a balm. Bag balm works, as well as a bee's wax balm.

I've been using mushers secret but the abrasive rocks tore his pads up....Southern terrain doesn't bother him.
