Our local news station did a story on her when she came through our area last year.

I can offer a guess about the motivation that drives Stacey and others like her.

In 1989 I shattered my femur while skiing at Sunday River in Maine. It was a half year or more before I was able to walk normally again. When I left Springer for a thru hike attempt in April 1990, I still had the stainless steel splint in my leg. I was grateful for just being able to walk, and I needed to celebrate that.

(FWIW, Sunday River ski area is just a few miles from the AT near Grafton Notch.)
