Default Guthooks App - how to use question

I downloaded the Guthooks AT app to play around with
What does it mean when I click on a waypoint
    12.5 miles behind?
    or 10 miles ahead?

I kindof think it's trying to tell me that the point I'm clicking on is either behind me on the trail...or ahead of me on the trail, but I'm sitting maybe 400 miles away down in Florida....so I'm not sure if I'm right about that...

If you are off the trail it doesn't really work.

On trail, a waypoint will be shown as x miles away from you in trail miles.

Guthook apparently knows of a shortcut.

When you use Guthook, you must choose what direction you are hiking - NOBO or SOBO. Once you do that distance to waypoints such as shelters, water, views, roads, etc. will be shown relative to your current position on the trail and be noted as "behind" or "ahead" based on your hiking direction.
