Default Where exactly is Bald Mtn Brook Lean To?

I'm researching access to the Bald Mountain Brook Lean To, and I've gotten some conflicting and confusing results.

The ATC interactive map indicates one location:
    https://nps.maps.arcgis.com/apps/web...b7f6d25453e4e0

and Google satellite indicates another (assuming the building shown is the shelter):
    https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Appa...!1m0!3e2?hl=en

    My questions are:
    Which map is more accurate?
What is the road to the north/east of the shelter and is it passable (Is this the Rohland reference at Maine - Monson to Caratunk - mm 21.9)?
    http://appalachiantrail.rohland.org/

Does anyone have experience with this road? (I do not have a 4wd, but a mazda minivan with normal clearance and some spunk.)

Try contacting Baxter State Park and comparing the BSP map with your other map sources. BSP should know where there lean to is.

Teacher, the road to Pleasant pond is a very good gravel road. Most of the roads up there are good enough to drive on. Get yourself a Maine Gazateer. All the roads the AT crosses, in Maine, i've driven on in my car at some point with no issues.

Bald mountain on the map is Moxie Bald on the AT. There is a shelter on the South side of the mountain and one on the North Side. Shelter on the South side is almost on a dirt road. I'd drive on it. Troutdale road is more improved than Bald Mountain brook road, but both are graveled. I havent been up there since last year, but we drove all around up there in my car.

Thanks egilbe. I can find the road well enough on Google satellite, and in one of Rain Man's guides it says it's called the AT road and is only about 75 ft from the shelter. My concern is current condition. Last month it was indicated to us a certain road in VT was passable and it certainly was not. Of course I know there's a big difference between VT dirt roads and those in ME! Still, that's why I'm looking for anyone's personal experience with this particular road.

I plan to do a reconnaissance drive the day before our hike anyway, but having prior input is always helpful and comforting.

If you get a chance to join us for another cheeseburger in Caratunk I'll regale you with the story of my experience with the Gazeteer, the Hundred Mile Wilderness, and the elusive Tirio Rd. (But if you were at the 2015 Gathering then you've already heard it).

This isn't in BSP, but near Moxie Bald, still shy of Monson. But thanks.

Not to sidetrack the thread. I'm curious if you know why there is a discrepancy between Bald vs Moxie Bald. I hiked Caratunk to Monson last fall. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a726fe86c6.jpg

Maps say Bald Mountain. Sign says Moxie Bald, but the Moxie is crossed out. Its in Bald mountain township. The locals call it Bald mountain. As far as I know, only the ATC calls it Moxie Bald, probably to differentiate it from the 25 other Bald mountains in Maine?

My map says Moxie Bald Mountain, as does my AT Guide. It looks to me they just dropped "Moxie" the from Bald Mountain pond name.

google satellite is correct, that is Bald Mt Brook lean to.

the road is passable with a car but get a maine gazeteer like egilbe linked too

here is a link to a vid that hikes up moxie bald from that road...http://actoutwithaislinn.bangordaily...ear-the-forks/

Thanks so much! This confirms much of the information I've gathered, and makes me feel more confident that the road I'm seeking will in fact be there!

Our plans changed a bit, so I didn't try. I did find the turnoff from Moxie Pond/Trestle/Dead River Rd., and it looked quite passable. Rain Man checked it out and believes I would have had not trouble even though my car isn't high clearance. The unknown however was the pair of collapsed culverts that might have impeded my progress.

We opted for a different plan though and I met everyone at Blanchard Shirley Rd 2 days later.

Thank you again for all that info though. I anticipate it coming in handy when I bring some friends through next year!
