I just read a notice about the incident in an Austrian newspaper, and the text left a lot to guess.

So I thought to ask here if anybody had better information?
Thanks, this article gave me one more piece of info, and an important one:
The guy got hit by a flash out of the blue, no thunderstorm or such.
And, a response time for the rescue of 1hr is really good.
Glad he’s ok....I’m sure he earned a good trail name from this! FLASH

You can be hit miles from a thunderstorm
And one zap.....is always the first one as well. The clouds and convection are creating the charge. If it looks like it building...is enough.
Fishing in gulf in summer our routine was head out early, and work way in closer as day went. By 1 pm in summer thunderstorms are daily occurrence and you have to dodge them, if not plain head in. Dont want to be caught out with storms between you and land. I seen boats that got hit under sunny skies from a t storm 5-8 miles away. Not common...but also not unheard of.

Seriously...there is a place called Tinkers Knob?
Sorry Tinkers Knob is hilarious (the town not the event). Its up there with "Bell End", "Brown Willy", "Twat" and "Minge Lane". All gold.
Most larger boats have lightening conductors that capture and discharge the charge to earth (the sea). Boats without masts and boats without masts and humans with fishing rods are worse. Statistically is pretty rare.
