Default Getting from Amtrak to Shanandoa NP (no rental car)

I was thinking of taking the wife to stay somewhere in Shanandoa National Park for a few days while I get in a few section hike miles on the AT, hoping to take Amtrak from Jacksonville Fl, but it's getting that short distance from the closest train station to the Park itself that seems to be the rub, since with no credit cards we don't think we can avail ourselves of a rental car and a taxi would probably cost as much as the whole train trip. Any ideas on getting across that last vast expanse? Thanks!

    Basically this.

The nearest train stations to the south of Shenandoah are at Staunton and Charlottesville and on the east side is Culpepper. One thing you can do is check up on some community affairs type boards and see if there is some way that you can arrange some sort of ride up to the park.

I cant see visiting shenandoah without car personally if going to camp or stay in lodge. Youll need shuttles on both ends. I imagine you can find uber in waynesboro or front royal, etc.

I think lodging books up for leaf season, and is pricey too.

Worked a couple of seasons at Skyland. Can confirm that leaf season is the busiest part of the year and room availability is rare.

Another vote for Harpers Ferry then walk the AT, The trail does get very much like SNP before you get to the park itself. Also consider the bus, it is usually cheaper then Amtrak and may give more direct options. There is a trail town west of the park, if you can get there it may be a easy hitch as people are use to hikers needing lifts back to the trail.

https://www.rome2rio.com/s/Jacksonvi...nesboro-VA-USA When you get to Staunton I recommend using Stanimals for a shuttle to the park.

There is a regional transit service out of Charlottesville called JAUNT. It serves Nelson county on a limited basis. Nelson county is where Afton is located, that is the area where I 64 crosses under the Skyline Drive and the AT.

I think with a large enough cash deposit and or goid credit enterprise might rent you a car.
