The first article I read on this, omitted information about gun and cause of death. Probably not released yet.

This article and many since, omitted information about the drugs at their motel room...which may have contributed to their fate in some way.

"The couple was reported missing in July after an Airbnb host noticed that Joseph Orbeso, 21, and Rachel Nguyen, 20, had not checked out or removed their belongings, which included four types of hallucinogenic drugs."

This kind of stuff brings my tragic meter down a few notches...

Im not saying its so in this case....but people have been going to the desert to get whacked out on hallucinogens for years, since 1960s,,.

They seem to be implying that they got lost, ran out of water and then he shot her then committed suicide so they would die quickly rather than slowly baking in the sun.

Inexperienced newbies that don't know better.

I have to admit to being that newbie myself when I was about their age. I've never carried a gun in the back country, but when I started taking day hikes at a local state park, I had a military surplus style knife with a 6 to 8 inch blade strapped to my leg. I still have that knife, but I've not carried in in the backcountry for over 20 years.

Having lived in SoCAL for a few years I can tell you that the area they are from is generally very anti-gun and relatively few people carry weapons as concealed carry permits are virtually impossible to obtain. Add in illicit narcotics and you've got yourself a bonafide crime scene. That is why police are now calling this a murder suicide. He didn't want his and her bodies to be found. For all we know she was marched out there at gunpoint.

A couple of things bother me.
One is that they left to go on a hike at 6:45 a.m. the day they were supposed to check out and that's why they were reported missing that day when they did not check out and the owner check their room. If you were planning to check out any hike would have had to be a very very short one to be back by 11 a.m. or so, but yet the guy took a gun, and they were apparently well off Trail.

The other is that family members said they had broken up but yet here they were together. Everybody shares a hotel room with their ex and goes hiking with them right?

I'm pretty much agree with the murder suicide part, I don't know accidental the situation was though. ..... A few things just seem odd
