Default Augason Farms meals a good deal?

    https://m.samsclub.com/ip/af-din-pail/prod9620607

The reviews I read said that it's realistically 46 servings and that you have to repackage for backpacking purposes, but that still seems insanely cheap. I've never done the freeze dried meals before but I'm thinking of trying them this year to cut my gear and weight down to fit a smaller pack.

Anybody tried them? If the taste isn't there, can they be fixed up with some spices and bone broth powder?

I was a BSA Leader on our troop's 9-day high adventure trip in Maine this summer and we used Augason Farms for a number of meals. FWIW, I have used AA, BP & MH FD foods over the past 30 years and have for many years dehydrated my own fruits, veggies and jerky for backpacking use. I was curious to see how the AF FD food would turn out. I couldn't tell a difference in taste or quality from other brands. There wasn't a lack of meat in the meat dishes. spices were right on. In fact, it was pretty good. Granted we only had to repackage containers into 3rds, given our group size. My take away - I was pleasantly surprised at the prices and while I wouldn't buy bulk meals, I have thought about picking up the AF FD bulk veggies in the future.
    Hope this helps.

Checked the nutritional information and didn't find much nutrition. Very high in carbs, sugar, and highly processed (toxic hydrogenated oils, maltodextrin, GMO corn; GMO corn syrup, silicon dioxide, also known as quartz crystals) chemicals and artificial ingredients. Do you think this is food? I don't think so.

Here's the data for creamy stroganoff, from their web site:

Egg noodles (durum flour [wheat], eggs, glyceryl monostea-
rate, niacin, iron [ferrous sulfate], thiamin mononitrate, ribo-
flavin, folic acid), coconut creamer (partially hydrogenated
coconut oil, corn syrup solids, sodium caseinate [a milk
    derivative], dipotassium phosphate, mono-and diglycerides,
silicon dioxide and soy lecithin), modified food starch, low
sodium vegetarian beef base (salt, hydrolyzed soy protein,
maltodextrin, sugar, corn starch, carmel color, onion powder,
natural flavors, citric acid, less than 2% silicon dioxide added
to prevent caking), garlic powder, sliced mushrooms, dehy
    -
drated onion, sea salt, tomato powder, sour cream powder
(cultured cream [cream, nonfat milk, culture, enzymes] salt,
lactic acid, tocopherols, vitamin E, ascorbyl palmitate [a
form of vitamin C]), natural flavoring, sauteed mushroom
stock (****ake mushroom powder, maltodextrin, tapioca dex
    -
trin, salt, sunflower oil, natural buttermilk flavor, autolyzed
yeast extract, soybean oil, yeast extract, soy sauce powder,
onion and modified corn starch),sauteed onions (onion, soy
sauce [soy, maltodextrin, salt], maltodextrin, yeast extract,
buttermilk, natural flavor [contains milk], sunflower oil, salt,
chili pepper, less than 2% silicon dioxide for anti-caking),
roast meat flavor (yeast extract, salt), black pepper.

I don't mean to be negative, do what you want to. But if you don't want to get weak and sick here's a useful graphic from Dr Ted Naiman:
You want to be on the protein (top) side of the graph, not the energy (bottom) side.
Your grain-based food is situated in the fat-gain category. Lots of luck with that strategy!

Studies of hunter gatherer societies existent today have found that women provide the majority of food calories by gathering plant based foods and that the hunting men provide needed protein but a significantly smaller portion of total food calories. Seems at odds with Dr. Naiman but everybody is free to believe whatever they wish.
