What is the best stuff to use to water proof non treated gear? And to treat down? I have heard horror stories about Nixwax stuff.

The down wash and tec wash work well. TX Direct, the stuff to restore the DWR coating, did not work for me. My Marmot Precip jacket wet out same as before.

When I resumed hiking a few years ago, I tried hard to enhance the waterproofness of my old gear, by spraying or treating otherwise with any substance that was advertised or recommended.
Technicall, all of this failed miserably. While it helped to let a few initial raindrops pearl off nicely, it did nothing to make the stuff waterproof. After an hour in the rain the stuff was soaked and leaky as before.
Obviousely it helped to fill the vendors pockets, though.
