    Default Katadyn BeFree filter

I would like to hear from those who have used the lightweight Katadyn BeFree filter, especially over an extended period. Someone I met on the FT highly recommended it and urged me to get one for the CDT this summer - but he had used it on only a few short trips. Online reviews show that people who have just started using it seem to love it, but those who have used it over time often report poor durability - seals failing, holes developing etc.

The long term disappointments is what deters me. Personally- if you’re hiking the CDT, I’d stick with the proven Sawyer squeeze.

The internet tends to collect only negative experiences about products.
I’ve read several examples of folks having problems with the BeFree filter. I myself noticed a reduction in flow after sitting idle for a few months. I corrected the problem in a matter of a few hours.
I’m also skeptical of reports of total failure of a product soon after purchase and no mention of seeking relief from the company making the product.
I have no experience with the OEM Katadin water bottles. The Hydrapak 2 L Seeker soft bottle that I bought with the filter is light, sturdy and theoretically guaranteed not to leak. I have squeezed the Seeker very firmly without any problems.
Oh. And the BeFree can be used on the trail or in camp to drink from.
I hate to be redundant. I have only had good luck with the BeFree + Seeker.
    Cheers.
