Default First 100 Miles in NC

From the GA/NC border to Fontana Dam, can you put up a tent wherever you want or does it have to be at a shelter site?

    Thanks

You are in the Nantahala National Forest in this stretch and should be good to camp anywhere
off trail but AT Shelter sites usually have tent camping space. Campfires may be restricted during
dry spells. Once you cross into the Smokies, you need a permit and are limited to trail shelters.
