Yes there is a road that takes you to within a mile or so of the A.T at Barnjum. I live near there. It was fine last year. The road ends at several large boulders placed purposefully across the road to stop vehicles going further. You can park there and be on top of Lone Mtn in an hour or so or down at the Orbiton Stream in about 1.5 hrs.

If you follow the East Madrid Rd from Philllps for about 10 miles you eventually turn right onto the Barnjum Rd. This road deteriorates gradually and can seem sketchy but if you reach the boulders across it, you've gone the right way. Follow that same (overgrown) logging rd on foot and you'll eventually spot the A.T crossing it. Turn right to Lone Mtn, turn left to head down to the falls and up to Poplar Lean-to.

    Good luck.

I just got back from Maine and hiked ME 4 to ME 27 as three day hikes splitting them at the Barnjum road and Caribou Valley Road. Cheers is right with the directions to Barnjum. As long as you take your time on the road, its not bad. When you get to the boulders park and its about 30 minutes easy walk up to the AT. FYI, parking at the boulders is limited. Room for two, maybe three cars.

We also used Caribou Valley to break up Spaulding and the Crockers. I inquired from many sources including shuttlers, the MATC and others and the condition of this road definitely varies from season to season. As of a week ago (early September 2018) the road is in fine shape as long as you take your time. Drive until you see the barricade and park and proceed beyond the barricade and over the bridge. The walk up to the AT is only about 10 minutes.
