    GearJunkie
The SPOT is becoming a way of life on the Appalachian Trail. The satellite messenger devices are used by people who protect these wild places as well as thru-hikers like Dale Sanders, the oldest person to hike the whole 2,190 miles. SPOT messengers use ...

    The article reads:

"The worst situation during his AT attempt, though, happened when Sanders fell in the White Mountains of New Jersey."
Hey! I fell there too, but I could swear it was in New Hampshire.

It was a sponsored post in GearJunkie by SPOT - in other words paid advertisement with no intention other than marketing. Were the WB mods paid to re-post the link or do they really not know what an advertorial is?

Which is why sites have moderators - to moderate the all the scrapings (if they are halfway decent moderators).

“He summoned the courage and hobbled on. But he thinks his SPOT sparked the tenacity he needed to continue.”

So, without his SPOT, we would have just given up? Yeah, right.

I tried to follow a friend who thru hiked with a SPOT and all I can say it that it didn't work very well. Weeks went by without updates, and he thought he was updating... so don't believe all the promotional material that you read.

Eh..the moderators are pretty sh***ty around here. Just approving things that look remotely OK. They should read all the articles. (Much like the old Playboy Magazine? They only read WB for the articles. Or so I hear. )

Looking closely after this lively discussion, I think they found the sponsored advertisement both harmless and amusing and think other people do, too.
OTOH, one moderator in particular (rumor has it) is getting slush fund payments from SPOT, Gear Junkie, and the Illuminati!
