Many people hike the entire trail without using maps. The trail is very well marked, and there is a good deal of info in the AT DataBook

i know but it is also helpful to see the topographical information...I am not going to NOT hike because I don't have a map but I would be much happier with one...I am going solo....it;s like my security blanket

Hikergirl, try calling the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center 603 466-2721. The AMC Headquarters in the Whites is there. It's a great place with lots of services supporting hikers and trail maintainers. I'm sure they have maps, at least for NH. You'll want a map for the Whites as I recall the AT isn't always prevalent as we had to go on trails with other names at times. I think they can help you. Good luck.

I believe these were the last of the maps that were being updated, and that they wouldn't be available till the second half of the year sometime. Maybe you can acquire an older set somewhere.

I have the ATC's guidebook for New Hampshire and Vermont and the maps included are very helpful. They include elevation and contour maps for each of the sections. You probably wouldn't bring the book (heavy), but the maps would definately make you feel more comfortable if you can find a place where they're in stock.
