They are somewhat similar. But, they represent organizations pursuing unrelated "product lines" that don't compete with each other. There are lots of other somewhat similar trademarks out there.
And, for example, people generally don't confuse American Airlines with Alcoholics Anonymous just because they both use AA in their logos.

That said, I agree, American Tactical's logo pretty much sucks from a design standpoint.

The symbols don't really look alike, AT is a tree and AT2 is an arrow or umbrella. And I agree with the others that the AT2 is a pretty ugly design.

I doubt anyone really gives a **** about this outside of just looking to stir up a conversation.

Thanks for the thread though because it produced some insightful comments about a topic I know very little about (trademarks/IP), always cool to learn something new.

Agreed... This is interesting due to a few trademark issues my son's brewery has been involved in:

    1) Trademarking a craft beer called LMFAO (an acronym for Let Me Fetch an Oatmeal Stout). A lawyer representing a defunct music group contacted them. The brewery fought back - and won - based on the fact that a craft beer is not the same as a music group.
    2) Trademarking two craft beers: Your Mom on French Toast and Your Gram on French Toast (which actually features MY MOM on the label - proud daughter here!). My son's brewery lost this one. Another company has trademarked the pronoun "Your" (referencing root beer!)- and that may not be used with any beverage containing alcohol. This was not contested. My son's brewery understood. The beers were renamed Cinna-Mom and Cinn-Gram.

Intellectual Property is a big deal in the U.S. I see how the A.T. symbol might be misused by the tactical team; however, it wasn't clarified when the team sought the patent/trademark (whichever!)!

I guess my son "infringed" on the AT symbol when he made this for me for Christmas!

I tattooed the AT symbol on my right calf after I completed my hike. I did not however, ask the ATC for permission. Am I in real trouble????

The reason I began this discussion is that I was at a local shop where it was being discussed and them folks were pissed. So I got on the bandwagon a little bit there myself until I just gave it some serious thought. So I brought it to the people who know hiking and love the trail. You all didn't give two thumbs about it and I thought this ain't no big deal at all. Made me look foolish I guess but it was something to talk about

Just to to be clear... I really do have the AT tattoo, and I was being facetious about being in trouble.

And Larry, I don’t think you were being foolish.
