Not sure if this counts, but leaving Connecticut and entering New York, the trail goes right down the middle of the Pawling Nature Reserve.

    Here's the information:

In New Jersey, you may wish to note Walkill National Wildlife Refuge, the only NWR through which the Trail passes.

And in Connecticut, the Trail passes through Shaghticoke Indian Reservation, the subject of many disputes.

Also since you're listing everything by state, the southernmost part of Maine is also in White Mt. National Forest.

Are you interested in federally designated wilderness areas?

Someone asked me the other day how many state forests and national parks we'd be travelling through... and despite all of the research I'd done and all of the things that I had learned, I found myself totally unable to answer that question! So I figured I had better come up with a list. Anyway, I'd like to have a list of all of the various designated areas I'll be walking through. So this is what I've got so far. I'd take whatever you could add.

No maps handy, I'm out of town, but I'm fairly certain there are several wilderness areas in VA that the trail passes through.

Hey! If you list GSMNP under 2 states, you can do the same for the Chattahoochee NF. Where's good ol' GA?

Not a big deal but for the sake of accuracy the current trail does not pass through Amicalola, only the approach trail does. Many thru-hikers by pass the approach trail and reach Springer from FS 42.

    Default more excruciating detail...

PA also has Weiser State Forest and the DWGNRA. In NY, the trail goes through the new Sterling Forest State Park, but within NPS corridor I think.

This list has major omissions and the trail in Maine does not go through the White Mountain National Forest.

    The major omissions include:

Mahoosuc Preserve, Four Ponds Preserve and Nahmakanta Preserve. Mahoosuc runs from the New Hampshire border to the East B Hill Road north of the multiple Baldpate summits. The relatively small Grafton Notch State Park divides the Mahoosuc Preserve, which totals around 40,000 acres.

Four Ponds is around 15,000 acres between Route 17 and Route 4 south of Saddleback. Nahmakanta is about 40,000 acres located south of Baxter State Park in the so called "100-mile-wilderness."

All three, along with Bigelow, were created in part out of the recovery of 400,000 acres of land that Maine reserved when it sold its public domain during the first half of the 19th century -- and then forgot what it had done. The scattered acres were treated as private lands for more than a century.

Out of court settlements and eventually a Maine Supreme Court decision resulted in the swapping of scattered 1,000+ acre parcels for larger parcels of equal value and more suited for public recreation and state forest management.

There are a number of smaller state preserves through which the trail runs. I don't have a complete list.

    Weary
