Based on clearer reports, and Odies interview.
This individual sounds like he is quite disturbed, at least at times.
And has a hatred of hikers....all hikers
    His actions dont contradict that

It is very tragic whats been reported.

Apparently there were more run-ins than the one arrested for. Doesnt seem related to any individuals.

At least one of the original incidents where they contacted police involved a hiker who is all the way to Harpers Ferry so he was not being tracked down. the couple that said they were involved were not that far along on the first incident. I have been watching their blogs this year. So seems to be random hikers.

not exactly but here's what the ATC put out--
"(5/12/2019) The Saturday closure of the Appalachian Trail from Va. 16 at Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area Headquarters (mile 534.2) trail north to Va. 42 (mile 558.2) near Ceres/Groseclose has been lifted. "

Listen Guys if there's one piece of advice I can give hikers especially in remote areas....
    1. Don't engage (argue) with the crazy nuts you encounter..... If you're alone anyone that gives you the slightest hint of "being off" should be considered a potential threat.
    2. Create as much distance as possible as quickly as possible, compose yourself and reassess.
    3. If you still feel the individual could be a potential threat to you or others immediately report the person/incident
    4. On your way to report warn everyone you encounter and encourage them to go with you away from the threat.
    5. Do not go back until you absolutely know the threat has been removed
    6. Always keep in mind that no matter how nice most hikers are the hiking community is not immune from violence or mental illness...
    7. Be safe

He'll be in an asylum for a long, long time. In my hometown there was a bizarre domestic murder where the guy killed most of his family, was put in an asylum but eventually got out. Killers are prisoners whether or not they are in jail.

But with no public court proceedings we shall never learn the facts of the case and thus be limited in our ability to learn from it...
