    This is kind of like rain gear, one doesn't fully appreciate what it does until they badly need it and don't have it. After that, it becomes standard gear.

    You could even try one of those silver mylar covered folding automobile windshield sun screens you can get at the dollar store. It's a good multi-use object that can function as a sleeping pad for someone who doesn't really need one. It will keep you dry(ish), offer a little insulation and padding. You could always start without a pad and add one later if you find it necessary. That is the opposite strategy used by the rest of us, who start with too much stuff and ditch what we don't need.
